Construction is now underway for the Inverness City Centre Streetscape and Transportation Project, one of Scotland’s largest public realm projects, designed by Land Use Consultants (LUC).
Since 2005, LUC has been acting as lead consultants on behalf of Inverness City Partnership for this £5.5million project which will transform the historic core of Inverness through comprehensive public realm enhancements, traffic calming, a public art programme and improved lighting.
The project addresses a variety of urban spaces including the main Victorian shopping streets, medieval lanes, closes, small squares and the riverside. New pavements and civic spaces are to be created in predominantly Caithness slab and granite setts and will be complemented by bespoke furniture, signage, street lighting and ornamental lighting.
The project also encompasses an exciting public arts programme involving many Highland artists. These include both temporary and permanent installations under the general theme of ‘Nature in the City’.
Tulloch Construction Ltd. commenced work on the first phase of works in January 2007. The first completed section of the project, Church Lane, was officially reopened on the 10th May 2007 with a short religious ceremony. The project is due to be completed by October 2008.
