The Routeing Strategy

Following a strategic review of technical, economic and environmental constraints, a series of well established step-by-step principles for routeing high voltage overhead transmission lines, 'The Holford Rules', were applied to identify a 'preferred' route and substation location for a 400kV overhead line and substation in East Ayrshire (Part A of the SWS Project).

The Consultation Document & Public Exhibitions

The findings of this routeing study were presented in the Consultation Document, the purpose of which was to provide an opportunity for interested parties to comment on the preferred route and substation location to inform the next stages of the project. In addition, a series of Public Exhibitions were held at the locations below, to inform interested parties of the proposals.

  • Ochiltree Community Centre: Monday 19th March 2007

  • New Cumnock Community Centre: Tuesday 20th March 2007

  • Drongan Miners Welfare Bowling Club: Wednesday 21st March 2007

  • Dalmellington Community Centre: Thursday 22nd March 2007

In total, 34 people attended the public exhibitions.

Next Steps

Following a review of the consultation responses, SPT have confirmed a 'proposed' route for the overhead line and a 'proposed' substation location, and a full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of both is being undertaken in conjunction, with the additional components of the SWS Project. Once the EIA has been completed, an application for consent will be submitted to Scottish Ministers. The EIA will accompany the application for consent.
