National and Regional Planning Studies and SEA

We have completed a number of key national and regional planning studies, including a review of the NPPG4 Land for Mineral Working, NPPG15 Rural Development and the NPPG series as a whole (for the Scottish Executive).

Cutting edge research frequently explores the practical implications of new planning developments including the role of the planning system in protecting and enhancing soils and the relationship between development plans and River Basin Management Plans introduced under the Water Framework Directive (both for the Scotland and Northern Ireland Forum for Environmental Research). We carried out a series of topic area studies (historic environment, biodiversity and culture) to inform preparation of the Regional Spatial Strategy for Yorkshire and the Humber.

LUC is in the forefront of applying Strategic Environmental Assessment in Scotland. We carried out an assessment of existing policies and plans in the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park during the run-up to the Park’s establishment. We also undertook an independent verification of the sustainability appraisal carried out for the Partial Review of RPG13 for the North West. We are currently undertaking an SEA of the review of the Scottish Forestry Strategy.
