LUC was commissioned by the South East England Regional Assembly to carry out an audit and assessment of land to mitigate the effects of housing development within proximity to the Thames Basin Heaths Special Protection Area (SPA).
GIS was used to create a spatial database of sites that could potentially provide suitable alternative natural green space to those people who might otherwise use the Thames Basin Heaths SPA. The sites in the database were the result of extensive data collection from sources including Local Planning Authorities, major land owners and managers and government agencies.
Data was collected on each site, and information could be retrieved either through a database front-end or using GIS.
GIS was used extensively to calculate information on each site, such as the size, the distance from the SPA, proximity to car parks and existing public rights of way. Potential effects on other areas designated for nature conservation purposes such as SSSIs and local wildlife sites were also examined spatially.
