Socio-Economic Analysis

The GIS team is also experienced in analyzing socio-economic characteristics and has a detailed knowledge of the various datasets that can be used to build up an understanding of the function of a study area.

Skills in GIS analysis and data collection and manipulation are used in tandem to support this research.

Several techniques have been developed to summarize this analysis in accessible packages. Results are typically delivered as clear summary statistics and ESRI Arc Reader projects to enable interaction with the data. Areas of particular expertise include:

Analysis of commuting patterns

A technique to provide a detailed breakdown and visualization of commuting patterns for individual, client-nominated settlements.  This process involves manipulation of a complex, national dataset to provide summary statistics and use of GIS to effectively visualize commuting patterns.

Analysis of housing affordability

A method for quantifying the affordability of housing for residents in an area. This approach makes use of national datasets that can be applied at a fine grain to give a detailed picture for nominated settlements or study areas.

Analysis of retail catchments

A technique to quantify and visualize the retail catchment area for nominated settlements or study areas.

Demographic/Socio-economic profiling

Analysis and visualization of a wide range of demographic variables in order to develop a detailed understanding of the characteristics of an area.
