Green infrastructure includes green roofs, parks, linear routes and the countryside around towns. It plays a major role in meeting national objectives for open space, biodiversity, landscape, health, water environment and other natural resource management. Securing effective green infrastructure helps to make towns and cities more sustainable, and England's Growth Areas and New Growth Points provide opportunities for innovative approaches.
At the national and regional level, LUC has undertaken an evaluation of the Community Forest Programme and assisted in developing the 'Green Arc', a strategic green infrastructure initiative around London. We also recently undertook an audit and assessment of land to mitigate the effects of housing development on the Thames Basin Heaths Special Protection Area, on behalf Natural England and the Regional Assembly.
We prepared Green Infrastructure Guidance for the Thames Gateway sub-region and are producing further guidance on the priorities for greenspace funding in the Thames Gateway, on behalf of Greening the Gateway Partnership.
At a District level, we developed the Green Grid Strategy for Thurrock, advised on green infrastructure in the Greater Ashford Growth Area, and prepared an Open Space Strategy for the City of Westminster. We are currently preparing a Greenspace Strategy for Islington.
At the site level, our track record started in the 1960s and 1970s with reclaiming sites in Stoke-on-Trent, Coatbridge (Scotland) and East and West London. We have subsequently advised on the design and improvement of parks and open spaces throughout England and Scotland, including London's Royal Parks.
