Landscape Planning and Assessment

LUC has been at the forefront of new approaches to landscape characterisation, developing the technique at a conceptual level and piloting new methods

Our Approach

LUC uses the technique of landscape character assessment (LCA) to document landscapes, understand what features are important and why, and to develop recommendations for managing and guiding change. The process can be applied at a range of scales from regional to site specific.

Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment (LVIA) is an important component of this landscape planning work.

Our specialist team of landscape planners follow a multidisciplinary approach to landscape character assessment, working with in house ecologists and environmental planners to develop fully integrated, innovative studies. The use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a core part of all LCA projects, driving the process of characterisation and producing outputs as dynamic maps and databases to complement reports. We work with clients to develop GIS/web based outputs allowing easy access and interpretation of landscape information. The development of GIS based systems is especially valuable for local planning authorities where it can become an important decision-making tool.
