Restored avenues in the Parkland The restored Fred Kormis Holocaust Memorial The Pleasure Grounds

Gladstone Park, Brent

As part of the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Urban Parks Initiative LUC were appointed by Brent Council in 1999 to carry out a Stage 1 application to the HLF for the restoration of Gladstone Park.

This application was succesful and LUC were again appointed in 2003 to produce the contract documentation, oversee the implementation of the works and to produce a management plan for the Park.

Landscape Character Based Design

A characer based approach was used to ensure that the design of the park was sympathetic to its rich hitorical context. Works within the historic core of the Pleasure Grounds have been designed with clean lines and medium to high maintenance planting whilst works within the Parkland were designed to reflect its rural character with less intensive maintenance regimes. These distinctions have also been reflected in the management plan to ensure that the characters types are retained.

Restoration Works

The works consisted mainly of works to pathways, tree, shrub and hedgerow planting, erection of new railings and installation of new signage and site furniture throughout the park. Extensive specialist conservation works were carried out to the Fred Kormis Holocaust Memorial which had been badly damaged by vandals.

Consultation

Public consultation was carried out as part of the Stage 1 application and the public were kept informed throughout the life of the project with regular public meetings and through signage posted within the park.
