The 140ha park is the centre-piece of Shanghai’s new financial district, Pudong. The design creates major new landform and waterbodies to ameliorate Shanghais abrasive climate in an area previously characterised by urban fringe issues and fluvial flooding.
The Park combines major recreation and visitor destinations, including new metro stations, with an ecological approach including protected areas of nature conservation interest. Subsequent to the Masterplan, LUC’s team - incorporating Jestico + Whiles, architects, and Peter Brett Associates, engineers - produced Design Briefs for detailed design development by local contractors and visited the site to advise on work in progress.
The result is both an immensely popular venue attracting millions of visitors annually and a notable piece of sustainable park design.
