undergraduate interview

John Jeffcock

How did you secure a position with LUC?
I was approached by a member of LUC Staff at my university graduate exhibition; I then attended an interview, at which we discussed my interests and portfolio of work.

What projects have you worked on in the past year?
I have worked on a number and range of projects within a variety of disciplines, ranging from landscape and visual impact assessments to newt surveying. I’ve been closely involved with green infrastructure work and had some good experience with new software, including using a wind farm design programme for the assessment of a new windfarm in Scotland which was great.

What have been the highlights of your time at LUC?
The social side of LUC has been great, helping to organise the Christmas party was a particular highlight of mine.

Any low points?
There haven’t really been any low points, everyone at LUC was really welcoming, there was always work to be done, and people were always more than happy to help.

What have you gained from your time at LUC?
A valuable insight into the working world, it’s been great to see how work is won through the tendering process and how work is carried out from inception meetings to completion.

What lessons have you learnt?
I’ve learnt a lot from the variety of projects I’ve been involved in, however one of the most important lessons I’ve learnt involves time management and being efficient in the work that I do – its not like university, your time is generally charged to a client so you have to make the most of it.

What advice would you give to students looking for a placement?
Try and find a company that suits your interests and one which is willing and able to develop your skills.

What advice would you give to students beginning a placement?
Be enthusiastic, whatever the work is, try and enjoy it and learn from it and don’t be afraid to ask questions!

Would you recommend LUC as an employer?
Yes, most definitely, it’s been a pleasure
working for LUC in London; the staff have all been really friendly and good fun. The company takes a great approach to work and always looks to accommodate the individual needs of its staff.

What are your future study/career plans?
I have decided to take another year out to go travelling, after which I’ll return to University to complete my diploma year and hopefully keep in touch with LUC.
