Bushey Rose Garden opens to the public after £1.5m restoration

LUC's landscape architects helped restore this gem of a garden to its former glory

We’re delighted to announce that Bushey Rose Garden reopened on 24th July, having helped to faithfully restore this gem of a garden which was originally designed by one of the UK’s foremost landscape architects Thomas Mawson in 1913.

LUC landscape architects were appointed by Hertsmere Borough Council in 2008 for the design and implementation of the restoration of this exquisite garden, which is in Bushey, Hertfordshire.

The garden had become dilapidated and was boarded up in 2005. Hertsmere Borough Council applied to the Heritage Lottery fund and were awarded full funding for the £1.5 million scheme in 2008. LUC worked as lead consultant and contracts administrator through the detailed design and implementation stages of the project on site, alongside Rees Bolter Architects, contractors, specialist craftsmen, restorers and the Hertsmere staff. The newly-restored garden, opened by the Countess of Veralum, celebrates Thomas Mawson and Hubert Von Herkomer, the famous artist who originally commissioned Mawson to create it.

David Mawson, one of two of Thomas Mawson’s grandsons that attended the opening, thanked the restoration team: ‘The Rose Garden has been beautifully restored due to the very hard work of you & your colleagues. [At the opening] a number of people asked me what I thought about the garden and I had no hesitation in saying that I thought it was lovely and would certainly have the approval of Thomas Mawson.'

The garden is now open to the public, and is open daily all year round.
