Profile
Philip Smith, Principal, is a chartered town planner with 22 years experience in local government and consultancy. Philip’s recent environmental planning experience includes an innovative study for the East of England Regional Assembly to test the concept of ‘environmental limits’ and its applications to strategic planning.
In the waste planning field, Philip has produced national and London-wide guidance on best practice and contributed to the preparation of three joint waste development plans.
Philip’s renewable energy planning experience ranges from regional energy strategies to the development of local policies and environmental impact assessment of wind farms. He recently advised a London borough on a spatially specific approach to securing sustainable energy through the planning process.
In terms of open space and green infrastructure, Philip has played a key role in the Greening the Thames Gateway initiative, including the preparation of a successful bid to government to fund the Thames Gateway Parklands. He has also overseen the preparation of three local authority open space strategies and is a CABE Space enabler.
Philip has lectured at Hertfordshire, South Bank and Middlesex Universities and University College London. He was a member of the advisory panel for the World Health Organisation / University of West of England 2003 publication on Shaping Neighbourhoods, a member of the Environment Agency’s policy working group on waste/resource productivity and the Communities and Local Government (formerly Office of the Deputy Prime Minister) planning research network.
