The environment provides a very wide range of essential services. It forms the basis of all food, timber and renewable energy provision. It provides for our recreation and well-being. It regulates our climate and flood flows and sustains the natural resources of air, soil and water. These and many other services are essential for human survival and quality of life. Every piece of land, developed or otherwise, needs to contribute to these vital services.
