Charlesfield New Village

Charlesfield New Village

Scottish Borders Council had identified the need to accommodate over a thousand new houses and proposed to concentrate it around Newtown St Boswells. Our analysis compared the landscape effects of the Council’s proposal with those of the alternative being promoted by our client.
In particular, we considered the impact on the Eildon Hills (National Scenic Area) and the Tweed Valley, with its historic associations with Sir Walter Scott and William Wallace.
Our study combined landscape character assessment with inter-visibility analysis, and concluded that the Charlesfield New Village would have helped limit the impact on this nationally important landscape, and on the setting of the Tweed Valley.
Meticulously prepared, our study played a key role in the local plan inquiry and the consideration of the landscape effects of the available options.
