Diana, Princess of Wales, Memorial Playground

LUC created an award winning play environment that encourages children to imagine, explore and interact with other children in a safe but challenging environment.
Situated within the historic Grade One setting of Kensington Gardens, we were eager to develop the Gardens' long association with local resident J M Barrie, author of 'Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens', and benefactor of the first playground on this site.
The rich text of Peter Pan inspired and united the different areas of the play environment: the beach and cove, the ship, the oak tree village and tree house encampment.
Working alongside a specialist team including child psychologists, play equipment manufacturers and artists/craftsmen, LUC developed a series of play spaces and pieces of equipment which stimulate and encourage children’s sense of imagination, and challenge their mental and physical prowess.
The use of natural materials such as timber, sand, beach pebbles, glacial boulders, grass, wood bark and planting were essential in creating a rich, organic environment, away from the stereotypes of bright primary colours and plastics.
The result is a highly interactive environment. The rich text of Peter Pan is a fitting tribute to a Princess who loved children and never grew old.
