Eurocentral is a project of extraordinary scale, both geographically and temporally, as to date LUC has consulted on upwards from 25 contracts for this development over more than 20 years.The site is one of Scotland’s largest inward investment sites for large-scale commercial and warehouse development. We were commissioned in 1989 by Scottish Enterprise Lanarkshire / Mossend Developments to act as Landscape Architects for the 350Ha development and also to carry out Environmental Impact Assessments for the proposals.LUC’s landscape masterplan introduced a strong structure to provide a backdrop for industrial buildings and yards with very large footprints. With some buildings up to 200,000 square ft, it was essential to provide this framework to create a low density development image and yet plan for an attractive working environment.Our approach to the scheme created a high-quality yet low maintenance design to provide screening to large scale units using a simple mixture of native plant species. This design was applied consistently and has proven to be robust, keeping a strong yet simple image to avoid giving way to an industrialised landscape. The planting areas also created wildlife corridors, allowing eco-diversity to develop on the site.LUC sought to develop a local identity for this very large site, and as development continues Eurocentral is set to become a standard for commercial developments.
