About the project

LUC acted as independent consultants for the Cannock Chase AONB Partnership, examining options to enhance the financial sustainability of the AONB against a backdrop of reduced public funding.

We carried out an appraisal of the available mechanisms for alternative sources of funding. Firstly we assessed potential schemes against the particular needs of Cannock Chase AONB. We then undertook extensive consultation with stakeholders on their best options, an important part of finding an appropriate model for achieving greater financial sustainability.

Our findings

The results of the report concluded the preferred option was a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) under the Charities Act 2011, following further detailed assessments and the approval of the Joint Committee. A CIO would work with the current AONB Unit to help raise funds, including carrying out suitable projects to help secure their financial future.

We also developed an Implementation Plan, providing the Joint Committee with the means to set up a CIO. The plan detailed the assessments and necessary practical steps that would be required to establish the body, including an estimation of resources and time needed to oversee the project to its completion.
