Swiss Cottage Green Infrastructure and Play Vision

Mitigating and adapting to the Climate Emergency through green infrastructure
Location
London
Client
London Borough of Camden

About the project

The London Borough of Camden asked LUC to undertake a Green Infrastructure (GI) audit of the existing assets within the Swiss Cottage ward. We also reviewed the existing play and recreation facilities and identified opportunities for future improvements.

Air quality data shows that Finchley Road (A41) experiences high pollution levels and is a risk to public health, increasingly so with the Climate Emergency. LUC’s advice will help the ward to become a healthier place for people and wildlife, adapt to climate change, mitigate flood risk, and reinforce a sense of identity.

Stakeholder consultation

Community-led walking tours of Swiss Cottage and consultation workshops were at the core of our study. Feedback from stakeholders guided our vision document, resulting in proposals for 35 GI projects. These include:

  • Re-imagining public realm to spark social activity;
  • Introducing community growing and parklets;
  • Greening bus stops and installing green roofs and walls for pollinators;
  • Sustainable drainage schemes in Flood Risk Zones; and
  • Strengthening wildlife corridors so biodiversity can flourish.

Our research into existing play facilities signalled the need for improved access, safety, inclusivity, and connection to nature. Potential sites considered for opportunities include improvements at Hilgrove Estate, additional facilities for Kingsland Estate, areas for ‘incidental play’ and an outdoor gym at Broadhurst Gardens.
