Character Assessment, Capacity and Sensitivity
  • Landscape and seascape character assessment (national, regional and site-specific)
  • Advice on responding to, managing and guiding landscape change
  • Urban landscape planning and townscape character assessment
  • Landscape sensitivity and capacity studies
  • Development of GIS/web based outputs allowing easy access and interpretation of landscape information
  • Training, consultation events and workshops

LUC was instrumental in developing the technique of Landscape Character Assessment, which provided the foundations for the first national guidance on the subject in 1988. We undertake landscape, townscape and seascape character assessments from the national to the local scale, which are used to identify what is important about landscapes and to advise clients on appropriate actions for responding to, managing and guiding change. We have subsequently prepared on-going updates of this guidance for England, Scotland and latterly Wales. In 2010–11 we sat on the Steering Group for the Seascape Assessment Guidance.

We have particular skills in using landscape assessment to help determine sensitivity and capacity for future change, and have pioneered approaches to these studies for various types of change including settlement growth and renewable energy.

The use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a core part of all of our character-based projects. We also work with clients to develop GIS/web based outputs allowing easy access and interpretation of landscape information and are increasingly using flyover landscape visualizations using Google Earth.
