Protecting and enhancing the natural environment for wildlife and people

Ecology

The science of ecology is a cornerstone of sustainable land use and management

Our ecologists play a key role in ensuring that in all our work we maximise opportunities for biodiversity in line with other objectives.

We have a specialist team of ecologists with experience in both terrestrial and aquatic environments. We provide objective and scientifically rigorous ecological advice to a variety of clients, from government agencies including Natural England and Scottish Natural Heritage through to commercial developers.

Ecological Surveys

Our ecologists undertake a range of ecological survey methodologies.  These include habitat and vegetation surveys such as:
• Phase 1 habitat survey
• Hedgerow survey
• River corridor survey
• Veteran tree survey
• National vegetation classification survey
• Habitat condition and land use survey

We hold a number of protected species survey licences across the UK.  Surveys undertaken by LUC include:

• Herpetofauna (reptiles and amphibians including great crested newt)
• Mammals (including bats, badger, otter, water vole, dormouse, hare, and red  squirrel)
• Birds
• Fish
• Invertebrates

Ecological assessment

Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA) assesses the potential effects of a development on habitats and species, particularly those protected by national and international legislation. EcIA is an integral part of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). We also carry out assessments of plans and policies under the Habitats Regulations to ensure the integrity of internationally important wildlife sites is not compromised.

Habitat management

Habitats throughout the UK are under considerable pressure from different forms of land use, and increasingly, if we are to conserve them, positive ecological intervention is needed. Our ecologists provide ongoing management for sensitive habitats.

Ecological Design and Appraisal

Our ecologists can undertake site appraisals in order to identify ecological constraints and opportunities for developers. Our landscape designers and ecologists work together to achieve designs sensitive to ecological and landscape features, whilst maximising biodiversity gains.

Ecological Clerk of Works Services

Increasingly, planning conditions require on site supervision during development to ensure biodiversity gains are secured and impacts either avoided or minimised. We advise on relevant wildlife legislation and provide practical solutions.
