LUC has prepared a Masterplan and Planning Statement to support a detailed planning application for a ‘nature retreat’ at Aldenham Reservoir.
The site, near Elstree, is currently used for walking, fishing and sailing and is owned by Liberty Lake Leisure Ltd (LLL Ltd). LLL Ltd’s vision is to keep the land and the reservoir open for current and future generations to enjoy with proposals for a new ‘retreat’ development.
The site doesn’t receive public funding, so there is a need to generate an income which the proposals acknowledge. The aim is to secure the management, enhancement and safe access to the wider site for future generations, while respecting its Green Belt location.

The proposals include the removal of all existing buildings on the site and the addition of:
- hub building
- a watersports equipment storage building
- a private management building
- a new ‘look out’ building
- a private area for accommodation pods
We prepared the masterplan, Planning Statement, Landscape Visual Impact Assessment, Ecological Appraisal and Heritage Statement. Our GIS & Visualisation team provided visualisations for the proposals. The Hub, Management and Watersports Buildings are designed by Tate Harmer architects.
