LUC boosting biodiversity for new Gordon Murray campus
Gordon Murray Group has appointed LUC as landscape consultants on a project to develop a new campus for emerging automotive technologies set within the parkland of the old BOC headquarters in Windlesham, Surrey.
LUC worked to ensure the development became part of the landscape against the backdrop of a mature parkland setting while delivering sociable, attractive landscape design. We planned to avoid and minimise the ecological impact of the development on the immediate site and local designations from the outset, ensuring the overall ecological value of the site is enhanced.
More than 100 trees are to be planted, providing foraging and nesting opportunities for birds and increasing habitat connectivity. Two hectares of grassland will be converted to species-rich neutral grassland to mitigate against the loss of improved grassland elsewhere. Hibernacula will be installed across the site to provide hibernating opportunities for reptiles and amphibians. Log piles created from wood collected from removed trees will be introduced alongside 30 bat boxes and 35 birdboxes.
The Biodiversity Net Gain calculations confirm that the proposals will achieve a net gain of +15.34% habitat units. LUC is proud to be fielding a multi-disciplinary team of in-house experts on this project – from Landscape Design and Ecology to Landscape Planning and Environmental Impact Assessment.
