LUC played a pivotal role in creating the digital immersive storytelling experience, A Boatman’s Journey, using GIS and 3D visualisation technologies.

Through this innovative StoryMap, LUC brings the Grand Canal — an Irish engineering marvel completed in 1804 — closer to audiences.

The project was built on the GIS team's extensive experience in storytelling through the use of StoryMaps, enriching the narrative with compelling visual and interactive elements.

A Boatman’s Journey features a 3D model of the iconic 31M Barge, created by Lighthouse Studios. LUC embedded this model within an interactive 3D environment, using 3D Vista software, allowing users to virtually tour the boat.

The project incorporates oral histories and archival content to bring the canal’s story to life, making heritage interactive and immersive.

Launched during National Heritage Week 2024, the initiative has already made an impact, receiving contributions from the family of a former boatman.

This collaboration enriches the archive and highlights the importance of community participation in preserving cultural narratives.

The project has been entered into several prestigious competitions, further cementing its impact:

• ESRI Ireland Customer Success Awards – A Boatman’s Journey has been shortlisted for the Customer Service Award, with results announced on 10 April.
• ESRI Ireland Community Choice Award – Open to a public vote, this award allows audiences to support the project by casting their vote here. Results will be announced on 10 April.
• Heritage Council of Ireland Award – The project was a runner-up for this award, recognising the collaboration between Waterways Ireland, the Heritage Boat Association and the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland during National Heritage Week 2024.
