Britishvolt Gigaplant secures government funding
Britishvolt has secured government funding for its Gigaplant manufacturing facility in Cambois, Northumberland.
The UK government has committed approximately £100m to aid in development, as part of its Automotive Transformation Fund.
LUC provided EIA services in relation to climate change and major accidents and disasters for the site.
Peter Rolton, Britishvolt’s executive chairman, said the announcement “marks the start of a truly exciting move towards a low carbon future”.
Business Secretary for the UK government, Kwasi Kwarteng, also praised the development. He stated it would help to put the UK at the forefront of global battery production.
Upon completion, the Gigaplant will be the UK’s first lithium-ion battery plant, and one of the largest manufacturing plants in Europe. It will produce enough cells for around 300,000 lithium-ion batteries per year once it is fully operational in 2027.
This major development is imperative for the UK to reach its net-zero ambitions by 2050. It will also play a significant role in the UK’s ongoing Green Recovery. Britishvolt estimates it could generate approximately 3,000 jobs over its operational lifetime.
