LUC working on carbon capture project for City of London Corporation
LUC is working with the City of London Corporation to assess and improve the carbon sequestration of several open spaces. Our team of Landscape Managers, Ecologists and GIS Consultants is working with Simon Stephens who is providing specialist arboricultural advice.
We will assess and map the different habitats in the area and calculate the current carbon sequestration and storage as well as the ecosystems services offered by the current landscape. The team will then propose methods for increasing sequestration while protecting the ecological, amenity, heritage and landscape value of the open spaces.
The project includes the Corporation’s open spaces outside London – such as Epping Forest and Hampstead Heath – as well as the parks, gardens and trees within the city.
Baseline calculations for the sites estimate annual carbon sequestration of 16.2 kilotons. The target is to increase this by at least 1.4 kilotons, though ideally up to 10 kilotons by 2027.
LUC will also calculate the carbon and financial cost of delivering the proposals and ensure the sites meet Biodiversity Net Gain over time.
