LUC develops landscape proposals for Charterhouse School boarding houses
LUC has worked with TSH Architects on landscape proposals accompanying two new boarding houses at Charterhouse School in Surrey. The scheme received planning consent in autumn 2019 and is currently undergoing construction.
Landscape proposals for Charterhouse School boarding houses
The school is set within a 250-acre campus in the Green Belt, on the edge of the Surrey Hills AONB. The landscape comprises mixed woodland, formal avenues and lawns, herbaceous planting, sports pitches and open grassland.
We’ve carefully positioned the new boarding houses within this challenging setting. Our proposals enhance the existing informal character of tree clumps and existing buildings and gardens, whilst protecting established views. The landscape design incorporates private courtyards, extensive new tree planting and a central walkway with seating to maintain connectivity through the campus.
About Charterhouse School
Charterhouse School was founded in 1611, moving to its current hilltop site in Surrey in 1872. It is one of the original seven private schools given independence from direct jurisdiction by the Public Schools Act 1868. The school is currently undergoing significant expansion to increase capacity to 960 pupils and become fully co-educational from September 2021.
LUC is also working on an ambitious scheme to pedestrianise the historic centre of the school.
