The Claypits celebrated at The Pineapples and Scottish Design Awards
The Claypits, Glasgow’s Inner City Nature Reserve, has won a Pineapple Award, and received a commendation at the Scottish Design Awards.
LUC worked with Scottish Canals and partners on this award-winning project for a number of years.
Project collaborators include LDN Architects, David Narro Associates, AECOM and Thomas & Adamson, whereas funding partners include Sustrans, Nature Scot, Green Exercise Partnership, Central Scotland Green Network and the Scottish Government.
The Claypits won the Pineapple award for Public Space, ahead of some of the UK’s best placemaking projects. The award celebrates projects that make ‘a positive contribution to the life of a wider place’.
The project also received a commendation at the Scottish Design Awards in the Public Realm/Landscaping category.
LUC’s involvement with The Claypits has been extensive. Following a design Charrette with stakeholders and the local community, we provided an Access and Environmental Improvements Strategy for the wider canal corridor. We also developed a Vision and Development Framework for the area between Applecross and Firhill Basins.
We then led the development of the Claypits Masterplan and subsequent design work for an area covering 17 hectares. Thereafter, we acted as NEC Project Manager and Principal Designer during construction.
The Claypits formally opened to the public in summer 2021. Local residents, community groups, politicians and funders gathered for a day of outdoor activities to mark the occasion.
The project has now won four awards, adding to Living Waterways and Scottish Design Awards in 2018, and a Landscape Institute Award in 2016.
