Clifden’s regeneration plan secures green light
Planning permission has been granted for the transformational Clifden town regeneration plan. Clifden is a popular tourist destination and the largest town in the Connemara region of County Galway, Ireland.
The Clifden Town Centre Enhancement Project, led by LUC in partnership with Galway County Council and an experienced multidisciplinary consultant team, aims to deliver a step-change in the quality of public spaces, reconnecting the town with its heritage and natural assets such as Clifden Bay. The design proposals seek to address local priorities and needs by presenting a vision for a more people-friendly town centre, featuring enhanced access to the waterfront and new green spaces that will benefit both residents and visitors.

The approval, issued by An Coimisiún Pleanála, allows Galway County Council to move forward in seeking funding for a comprehensive scheme that will reshape the heart of Connemara’s capital. The project includes the creation of a new Harbour Park south of Beach Road, a major reconfiguration of the town centre, and a full redesign of Beach Road Quay.
A town centre for people and nature
The town centre will see a reduction in the dominance of vehicles, with widened pavements, new pedestrian zones, and improved crossing points. Market Square will become a vibrant civic space, able to host events and festivals, while new planting and street trees will bring nature into the heart of Clifden. The scheme introduces rain gardens and nature-based drainage, supporting biodiversity and climate resilience. Street furniture and signage will be upgraded for a consistent, high-quality look, and the Alcock and Brown sculpture will take pride of place at the centre of the town.
Harbour Park: A new green heart
The new Harbour Park will transform a derelict site into a welcoming public park, with panoramic views over Clifden Bay. The design includes community gardens, an amphitheatre for outdoor events, a running track, and play areas for all ages. Native planting and wildflower meadows will boost biodiversity, while sustainable drainage and flood prevention measures will ensure the park is resilient to climate change. The park will be fully accessible, with improved connections to the town centre and Beach Road Quay.

Revitalising Beach Road Quay
The Beach Road Quay area will be reimagined as a high-quality waterside space, with new seating, improved pedestrian routes, and enhanced links to the town and Harbour Park. The project will celebrate Clifden’s maritime heritage, incorporating sensitive landscaping to create a safe and attractive environment for all. Mooring bollards and defined storage areas will support ongoing harbour activity, while new lighting and signage will improve safety and wayfinding.
A lasting legacy for Clifden
The regeneration plan was informed by extensive community consultation and a thorough understanding of Clifden’s unique character. By prioritising people, nature and heritage, the scheme promises to reinforce Clifden’s status as the ‘Capital of Connemara’ and a destination for sustainable tourism. The project will create lasting benefits for local people, support businesses, and enhance the town’s appeal for generations to come.
Galway County Council will now seek funding to deliver the scheme and start detailed design work as soon as possible. The Clifden Town Centre Enhancements Project stands as a model for rural regeneration, showing how thoughtful design can bring communities together and create places where people and nature thrive.
