Corriegarth 2 Wind Farm secures Section 36 Consent
Adding to the significant pipeline of renewable energy generation in the Scottish Highlands, Section 36 consent has been granted for the extension of the Corriegarth Wind Farm.
The project, spearheaded by BayWa r.e. UK Limited, involves the addition of 14 turbines with a maximum blade tip height of 149.9m, nearly doubling the operational capacity of the existing wind farm. This extension will play a crucial role in achieving the Scottish Government's ambitious target of 20 GW of installed onshore wind by 2030.
The 67.2MW extension is anticipated to generate clean, renewable energy, supplying approximately 49,500 homes annually. Following stakeholder and public consultation, the scheme underwent modifications in response. This included changes to the layout, the removal of two turbines, and the relocation of eight others.
As part of the other environmental commitments, the project includes a plan to restore 100 hectares of peatland, contributing to habitat management proposals and supporting the broader regional eagle management plan. Additionally, the project is committed to an annual community benefit payment exceeding £330,000.
Leading the landscape planning and visualisation efforts for the project, LUC played a pivotal role in advising on the scheme's design. The Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment (LVIA), Wild Land Impact Assessment, and Assessment of Effects on Special Landscape Qualities (SLQs) of the Cairngorms National Park were completed by the LUC landscape planning team. The LVIA formed an integral part of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) submitted to the Scottish Government.
Following an objection by The Highland Council (subsequently withdrawn), the project was referred to the Scottish Government's Department for Planning Environmental Appeals Division (DPEA) for determination. Our Associate Director of Landscape Planning, Dan Walker, provided expert witness evidence, which influenced the Reporters' recommendation for consent. The Scottish Ministers fully adopted their findings and reasoned conclusions, resulting in the granting of Section 36 consent and deemed planning permission.
With Section 37 consent for the associated grid connection also secured recently, the project is now poised to progress toward the discharge of planning conditions and the construction phase.
