LUC provides ecology training to RSPB Scotland
LUC’s Director of Ecology, Steve Jackson-Matthews, was delighted to spend the day with RSPB Scotland staff and volunteers, providing training on ecological survey methods. Despite a typically rainy June day in Glasgow, delegates were in good spirits as they arrived at Kelvingrove Museum for a full day of training in Phase 1 Habitat Survey.
The day included an introduction to this important ecological survey method, tailored specifically to RSPB. It explored how to design and implement a habitat survey and, more importantly, how to interpret it for a wide range of interested parties. Undeterred by the rain, delegates then spent the afternoon practising their new-found skills in Kelvingrove Park, much to the bemusement of local dog-walkers and school children.
As every ecologist knows, the best part any Phase 1 survey is the ‘colouring in’! After drying off from the field visit, delegates settled down with a cup of tea, a biscuit and a box of colouring pencils to complete their Phase 1 Maps.
