LUC helps Epping Forest balance recreation pressures and environmental protection
LUC has completed a project for the City of London to provide advice on balancing the recreational value of Epping Forest to the surrounding communities with its significant ecological significance.
Designations recognise the forest’s ecological value; much of the area is a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
LUC’s Landscape Architects, Landscape Managers, Ecologists and an Access Specialist considered the pressure on the forest as a recreational resource from an increasing local population.
We looked at the nature of the ecological sensitivity of the forest, particularly its acid grassland and ancient trees. Our work put forward conceptual proposals for providing suitable facilities for visitors but which protect the habitats that lend to its protected status.
