Great Crested Newt translocation starts at Benenden School
LUC has begun a two-month Great Crested Newt translocation for Benenden School in preparation for a £2m project for new staff housing.
Great Crested Newt, a European Protected Species, have been identified at the site, so the works are being undertaken under a Natural England licence to ensure none will be put at risk when development starts.
School Estate Bursar Simon Brophy said: “Developing the School site is important to us but it is equally important that we do not unbalance the wildlife we are so lucky to have here. The translocation period is a fascinating process and we are eager to see what Peter has found each morning.”
Once the translocation period is over and any Great Crested Newts have been relocated, the School can begin construction of eight new homes, part of a long-term redevelopment programme which will be completed in time for the School’s 100th anniversary in 2023.
