Help refresh Broxtowe’s Blue and Green Infrastructure Strategy

LUC is working with Broxtowe Borough Council to produce a refreshed Blue and Green Infrastructure (BGI) Strategy that sets out a clear vision for enhancing the borough’s rivers, canals, green spaces and other natural assets.

The updated strategy reflects progress since the last Green Infrastructure study in 2015 and introduces a new emphasis on Broxtowe’s blue assets, such as rivers, canals, ponds and lakes, which play a vital role in water management, biodiversity, and community wellbeing.

By taking a ‘themed’ approach, the strategy explores the current network of blue and green infrastructure across the borough, identifies gaps in provision, and pinpoints opportunities for improvement. The themes align with Natural England’s five Benefit Principles from its Green Infrastructure Framework, placing water management at the heart of every priority area.

The strategy draws on mapping, datasets and baseline evidence to show where investment could have the most impact. These findings will support the council in shaping a connected, high-quality network of BGI that delivers wide-ranging benefits, from flood resilience and carbon storage to recreation, biodiversity and economic uplift.

Broxtowe Borough Council are bringing together internal and external stakeholders to shape the strategy, ensuring it reflects the borough’s needs and ambitions. They will be consulting the public to ensure the voices of local communities are heard. The council’s public consultation hub is now live and will run until 1 September 2025.

The resulting input and evidence will help the council deliver its wider environmental and planning goals while supporting healthier, greener, and more climate-resilient places for people and nature.
