LUC inputs to innovative developer’s low carbon energy tool in Wales
LUC has partnered with two companies to develop an online feasibility screening tool. It will guide developers in identifying the optimal range of renewable energy sources, techniques and technologies in any Welsh locality.
Our GIS team will provide the spatial analysis, working alongside Yellow Sub Geo, the British Geological Survey and stakeholders. The outcome will be an easy-to-use tool for builders and retrofitters to help unlock the low-carbon potential of Wales.
The Innovative Housing Programme is funding the project. Housing and Local Government Minister Julie James announced over £30 million for innovative housing in Wales. This is part of a £90 million fund to test new approaches to help develop social and affordable housing.
To deliver thousands of new homes without incorporating fossil-fuel heating, developers and housing associations need suitable tools to inform and support the process of adaptation and implementation of a range of renewable technologies. A lack of knowledge as to which technology best suits, or what technologies are available, currently presents an entry-level barrier to the use of low carbon technologies.
