LUC developing design guidance for UK railway stations with 7N Architects
LUC has been working with 7N Architects and the wider design team to develop design guidance for small and medium-sized stations across the UK.
Our focus has been on the ‘Welcome Mat’ – an area of public realm at the entrance to the station, creating a meaningful sense of arrival and a sustainable, multi-use civic space.
The guidance seeks to balance the brand identity of National Rail with local distinctiveness, creating stations that are unique and grounded yet recognisable. The landscape embeds the station into its local setting.
A Place Appraisal forms part of the guidance, helping to develop an understanding of the local character of the area.
Palettes of paving materials and planting types allow the design to be tailored to the locality. Drawing influence from the underlying geology, these palettes communicate a subtle variation across the country.
The station designs include a multi-functional Activity Framework, designed as a flexible, community facility.
Public engagement has been a key part of developing the designs. Innovative consultation events have allowed members of the public to explore the proposals through an immersive virtual reality experience.
