Our Senior Ecologist, Michal Ostalowski, recently volunteered with the Raptor Study Group in the Scottish Borders. Founded in 1980, the Scottish Raptor Study Group consists of 300 experts who monitor and record birds of prey across Scotland.
During Michal's visit, the team checked three nests: a goshawk nest and two barn owl nest boxes. At the goshawk nest, they discovered two juvenile birds. One had already fledged and could fly, but they successfully ringed the second nestling, a female weighing 1 kg.
The team then examined a barn owl nest box with three fluffy, white nestlings. After ringing them, they placed them back in the nest. In the third nest, another barn owl box, they found five slightly older nestlings, most of whom were asleep and relaxed during the ringing process.
At LUC, we take pride in supporting our team’s involvement in Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility (CSER) volunteering. Each year, our staff members can choose a day to participate in a volunteer activity, allowing them to make a meaningful difference in their communities and beyond.
