LUC helps secure planning permission for a new café and other facilities at Highbury Fields, Islington

LUC has been involved in this project since 2017, advising Islington Council's Parks Department on a planning strategy, undertaking surveys, assisting with consultation, and preparing the planning application documents.

The scheme will replace the existing café and adjacent buildings at Highbury Fields, increasing capacity and accessibility,  providing new toilets and changing facilities, whilst respecting the landscape of the park.

Designed by architectural firm Levitate, the new café will provide an attractive, contemporary venue that meets the needs of park users. A teaching shelter and vibrant wildlife garden will be created in place of the former bandstand and One O’clock club, and the site of the former, derelict park keepers cottage will be returned to parkland.  The development will provide better facilities while also minimising the built footprint, maintaining the park’s openness.

LUC’s input to the scheme

LUC produced the Planning Statement – a document outlining the project's evolution, policy compliance, and rationale. The statement determines the project's accessibility, equality, and diversity through improved facilities while emphasising the importance of preserving the park's natural character.

Our Heritage Assessment Statement describes how the project respects the park’s historical significance.

Our Biodiversity Net Gain Assessment evaluated the park's current ecological landscape and proposed enhancements, ensuring a net gain in biodiversity through the development.

We also prepared the Preliminary Ecological Appraisal, assessing the potential impact on protected species and designated sites surrounding the park.
