LUC hosts Spring Mapathon 2022
LUC was delighted to host its Spring Mapathon earlier this week.
Staff from across the company joined together to digitise geospatial data for at-risk communities in central and eastern Tanzania.
We chose a project that combats gender-based violence in the region. By mapping buildings and infrastructure, contributors provide a basis for prevention strategies and support NGOs working on the ground.
Accurate and up-to-date maps can help to identify hotspots of sexual violence, and transform public space into safe and welcoming environments.
The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team runs the project using data from OpenStreetMap (OSM) and satellite imagery from Maxar.
Our Mapathons are based on initiatives by Missing Maps.
Alongside OSM contributors from across the world, our team helped to map approximately 22% of the Nkinga region, and 11% of the Manza region. These areas were largely unmapped prior to the project.
