Radionuclude Department Project granted full planning permission

LUC is happy to share that Glasgow City Council has granted the Radionuclide Department (RND) full planning permission. LUC provided landscape architecture support.

The building is being relocated from the Western General Hospital to Gartnavel Hospital. The new location is ideally positioned to serve the wider West of Scotland region. As a key distribution hub for radiopharmaceuticals, the facility will be the largest RND in the UK and one of four in Scotland.

Our Landscape Design Team worked as part of a multi-disciplinary team led by Oberlanders Architects. With a simple but effective landscape approach, the design makes use of level changes to create rest and break out spaces on the existing steeply sloping site. A simple palette of materials will respond well to the materiality of the proposed building and is sympathetic towards the adjacent Grade B Listed Calman Centre (formerly the Royal Gartnavel Chapel).

Planting proposals have been designed to integrate well with the natural regeneration of birch woodland and pioneer species on the former brownfield site. This will create a naturalistic landscape setting for the new RND facility.

The project is progressing through detailed design, led by BAM Construction. Our team are looking forward to a site start, hopefully in 2024, and are delighted to play a role in bringing forward this important facility.
