Chorlton Community Garden

LUC Landscape Design team assists Chorlton Community Garden group

Three members of LUC’s landscape design team are assisting the Chorlton Community Garden group.

Jacq Whitworth-Allan, Ben Wayles and Beth Houston are volunteering their time under LUC’s CSER activities program. The group aspires to transform an existing public garden space in Chorlton, Manchester into a green hub – celebrating and nurturing biodiversity, learning and social cohesion.

The garden is not currently open to the general public. However it does provide a home for community events such as the Chorlton Plant Swap.

LUC is producing sketch design layouts that the community will consult on. We will then draw up a preferred option later in the spring.

Key design aspects include:

  • raised planters for edible gardening,
  • spaces for wildflower and pollinator species,
  • the creation of a wheelchair accessible route through the garden,
  • flexible spaces with seating for community use,
  • a shelter,
  • a small operational area.

A variety of funding applications will realise the renewed garden.

Jacq Whitworth-Allan said: “The group is really grateful for our time and creativity, and for us, it feels good to work on a local project that will bring such benefits to the community.”
