LUC supporting low carbon transport network in Pristina

LUC is advising the Municipality of Pristina with plans to develop a new low carbon transport network for the city.

LUC’s specialist Transport & Movement Planning team brings a wealth of experience in sustainable urban development. Our robust methodology will help guide the planning process from inception through to delivery.

Our team is conducting a detailed data gathering exercise alongside a comprehensive SWOT analysis. This process will enable us to identify and prioritise suitable transport interventions.

Pristina is an ancient city whose rapid expansion since 1947 has exacerbated underlying limitations to its movement network. Municipal administrations throughout this period have adopted conflicting approaches to transport planning, resulting in the confused network currently in place.

Historically, these administrations have prioritised the private vehicle, which they viewed as an indicator of economic success. As such, the city adopted designs and standards to accommodate and encourage private vehicles, without close consideration to sustainable movement networks.

In recent years, Kosovo’s success as an independent nation has led rural populations to Pristina’s urban area. Young professionals form a large part of this migration, as they seek better employment opportunities. This provides an opportunity for sustainable transport interventions, as younger populations are more open to change, less likely to own private vehicles, and are more conscious of their environmental footprint.

This is a key driver to any future mobility strategy, as the transport network must support economic, leisure and retail growth, whilst also pushing towards carbon net zero.
