LUC says farewell to a Landscape Visionary

This week, we bid a fond farewell to Martin Tabor, our esteemed Director of Landscape Architecture, as he officially embarks on a well-deserved retirement after an incredible 40-year journey with LUC. Martin holds the distinction of being the longest-serving member of our LUC family.

From the early days when our team comprised 45 members in 1983, Martin has been an integral part of our success, contributing his expertise to a myriad of challenging, varied, and exciting projects. When asked about his enduring commitment to LUC, Martin simply said, "LUC has always been challenging and interesting. There has never been a dull moment from one project to another."

Throughout the decades, Martin has left an indelible mark on numerous projects, showcasing his passion for landscape architecture. Some highlights include his work on the Summerlee Heritage Museum in Coatbridge during the 1980s, the Garden Festival in Glasgow in 1988, and his involvement in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes for the Highlands and Islands in the 1990s.

The 2000s saw Martin at the forefront of high-profile public realm schemes, leading the initial phase of the Glasgow International Financial Services District and Inverness City Centre, followed by Mansfield Park, Bellshill Town Centre and numerous urban regeneration projects in the early 2000s. Latterly, he has led LUC's work on the University of Glasgow's Western Campus, a £22m landmark project for Glasgow and the west of Scotland.

He has also played a pivotal role in numerous heritage projects, undertaking award-winning conservation projects that include Haddo Country Park in Aberdeenshire, Lews Castle Grounds on the Isle of Lewis, Mid Links in Montrose and recently the regeneration of Zetland Park in Grangemouth. He is also a Building with Nature Assessor with a passion for climate adaptive design of public spaces and parks award. Recently, this has included the design of Malls Mire Park in the east end of Glasgow.

Beyond his professional achievements, Martin is legendary for his creative Christmas party outfits, injecting a spirit of joy and camaraderie into our celebrations.

Martin now looks forward to new adventures, refreshing old skills, and taking on some personal projects, with some relaxation in between.

Thank you, Martin, for four decades of dedication and inspiration.
