Mapathon

LUC holds second Mapathon with DEC

Humanitarian organisations have a desperate need for detailed mapping, as it often does not exist in areas affected by natural disasters.

In the aftermath of the earthquake in Nepal, LUCs Mapping and Visualisation team ran a successful Missing Maps Workshop from our London office. We mapped hundreds of buildings, settlements, roads and rivers in the Palpa District in Nepal, contributing to the maps being used by humanitarian organisations operating in the area.

We’ve now joined forces with Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) and will be running a larger Mapathon in September with staff from both DEC and LUC. Each session will include a short presentation on the process, meaning that anyone can get involved – no previous mapping experience needed.

We will then hold a monthly ‘Mappy Thursday’ where we’ll spend a few hours a month mapping to contribute to the relief effort. We’ll be inviting some of our clients to join in and contribute to the ongoing relief effort.  Not only is this for a great cause but it’s good fun as well!

Get in touch with our Mapping and Visualisation team if you’d like to get involved.
