LUC commemorates Mark Lintell at Bedfont Lakes' 30th anniversary celebration

LUC joined the community at Bedfont Lakes Country Park on Sunday 20 July to mark 30 years since the park first opened to the public.

The Mayor of Hounslow, alongside former colleagues, partners, and project contributors, gathered to celebrate the park’s transformation from derelict land to a thriving green space.

A close-up of a bronze plaque on the ground. It reads: "Mark Lintall 1943 - 2006 Chairman of Land Use Consultants Environmental Planner and Visionary 'He helped make this Park happen'". The plaque is surrounded by dry grass and some green blades.

The event included the dedication of two memorial benches in honour of the late Jim Buchanan and former LUC chairman Mark Lintell, who worked closely together on the original Bedfont Lakes project.

A bug hotel was also dedicated in Jim’s name, and a carved wooden sculpture will be added later this year.

Attended by a number of former LUC employees, the organisation supported the installation of Mark’s memorial bench and continues to recognise his lasting impact.

A group of four adults are outdoors on a sunny day. On the left, a man in a blue plaid shirt and jeans is speaking into a microphone. Next to him, a man in an orange reflective vest and dark clothing stands with his arms crossed. To the right, two women are seated on a bench; one in a peach-colored top is holding a drink, and the other in a dark jacket and sun hat is looking towards the speaker. In the background, there is a field of dry grass and green trees under a partly cloudy sky.

Mark Lintell was a pivotal figure in environmental planning.

He championed sustainability long before it became common practice and led pioneering work in environmental impact assessment and flood alleviation.

He believed development should meet the highest design standards while respecting communities and the natural environment.

Mark joined LUC in 1973 and served as chairman from 1990 until 2005.

His projects ranged from local regeneration in the West Midlands to the masterplan for Shanghai’s Central Park Pudong.

His commitment to liveable, people-centred design helped shape national thinking on urban planning and sustainable infrastructure.

A group of adults are gathered outdoors on what appears to be a cloudy day. In the foreground, two men are facing each other and smiling, seemingly in conversation. The man on the left is wearing a white collared shirt, and the man on the right is wearing a blue plaid shirt with sunglasses hanging from his collar. Other individuals are visible in the background, including a woman in a light blue top and sunglasses, and another man with his hand raised to his face. Beyond the people, there's a natural landscape with trees and dry grass under a grey sky.

The 30th anniversary event featured activities for all ages, including local crafts, food vendors, funfair rides, and nature groups.

It offered a fitting celebration of the park’s history and the individuals who shaped it.

We are proud to have played a role in the early stages of Bedfont Lakes and to honour Mark’s legacy through this tribute.
