LUC completes location appraisal for National Trust
LUC recently completed an important study on landscape, views and visual amenity for the National Trust in Southern England.
The study included an appraisal of the potential effects of different location options for new visitor facilities at the Birling Gap National Trust property.
Substantial cliff falls in the last few years means the cliff face is now less than 7m from the existing buildings and some demolition has already had to take place.
Birling Gap is located at the end of the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs in South Downs National Park. The existing facilities include a shop, café, visitor centre and learning space. 350,000 visitors per year come to enjoy the scenic views and use it as a starting point for walks.
This appraisal will support the identification of a sustainable future for the visitor and staff facilities at Birling Gap, with the aim of minimising the impact on a highly sensitive landscape within the National Park whilst still providing opportunities for an improved visitor experience.
