LUC's Planning team volunteers at Dams to Darnley Country Park
Our Planning team recently enjoyed a day volunteering at Dams to Darnley Country Park.
Managed by East Renfrewshire Council and Glasgow City Council, the park comprises woodland, grassland, open water, wetland, and farmland. The majority of the park is a Local Nature Reserve containing woodland, grassland, and wetland habitats.
The largest woodland within the park is Waulkmill Glen. This is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The Country Park ranger service holds community events such as health walks and group volunteering activities.
The team had a choice of volunteering activities to choose from, but opted to participate in ivy management. They felt that it relates to environmental conservation and they could help maintain the country park for visitors and wildlife. Effective management of ivy along pathways is important, so the team focused on ivy removal along the paths throughout the park.
Led by the Park Ranger, the session kicked off with a briefing on the park's history, safety, ivy removal, and the correct use of tools for ivy management on trees. Some ivy is invasive and can be detrimental to trees - the ranger discussed the importance of ivy for wildlife and highlighted the importance of managing ivy effectively to allow both local wildlife and woodland to thrive.
