LUC appointed to help Protected Landscape partnerships deliver national environmental targets
Natural England has appointed LUC to lead a project aimed at helping Protected Landscapes (National Parks and National Landscapes) in England to calculate their contributions to national environmental targets.
The project is part of the wider Protected Landscapes Targets and Outcomes Framework (PLTOF), published by the government in January 2024. The Framework sets ambitious goals for these nationally important landscapes, which collectively cover nearly a quarter of England.
The targets are for the geographic area covered by each protected landscape, with all partners collectively responsible for their delivery.

As part of the project, LUC is conducting a series of workshops with teams from all 44 Protected Landscapes.
These workshops are designed to support Protected Landscape bodies and their partners in developing bespoke contributions to three of the ten national targets established in the PLTOF.
“We are pleased to be working with Natural England on this important project,” said Kate Ahern, Director of Landscape Planning at LUC.
“Protected Landscapes play a vital role in protecting our environment and we are committed to helping them achieve their goals.”
We are halfway through the nine-workshop series and on track to produce the guidance and tailored ‘road maps’ for each protected landscape later in the autumn.
