LUC to undertake Sustainability Appraisal for Cambridge
LUC will undertake a Sustainability Appraisal (SA) of Cambridge to inform the Greater Cambridge Local Plan.
South Cambridgeshire District Council and Cambridge City Council asked us to report on the significant sustainability issues and effects of their emerging plans and policies. Our work will encourage sustainable development and help to avoid or minimise the potential for adverse effects.
South Cambridgeshire surrounds the urban Cambridge City, but South Cambridgeshire is largely rural. Our assessment will take into account the differing character of the two areas. This includes the rich heritage and countryside resources, whilst acknowledging the need to house a growing population and provide land for growing employment and economic needs.
Both Councils have also declared a climate emergency. SA can play a role in identifying which options will have the biggest impact on minimising the area’s carbon emissions. It can help residents and workers adapt to the effects of climate change.
LUC ecologists will also produce a Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA).
Both Cambridge City Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council have recently adopted new Local Plans which guide development up to 2031. These include significant new developments and several new settlements. We look forward to applying our expertise to the future of Cambridge’s infrastructure.
