Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon approved
We are pleased that Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon was approved by Energy Secretary Amber Rudd yesterday.
The lagoon will harness the 10m tidal range within the bay to produce electricity via a series of submerged turbines with a total capacity of 320 MW. The first proposal of its type to be developed in the UK, the tidal lagoon is considered as a nationally significant infrastructure project (NSIP).
Drawing on our expertise in seascape assessment and marine renewables, we analysed the draft LSVIA to identify key issues for the project, as well as providing detailed comments to be fed back to the developer and their consultants.
We also reviewed the final LSVIA, focusing on the key issues which NRW needed to highlight in responding to the submission, and understanding the extent to which earlier comments had been addressed.
Following acceptance of the application for examination by the Planning Inspectorate, LUC then provided detailed ongoing advice to NRW in preparation for the hearings.
