‘Right tree, right place’: enhancing landscape character through woodland creation

The climate crisis has highlighted the need for increased tree and woodland planting in the UK. Trebling current woodland creation rates is a central pillar of the Government’s effort to reach net zero emissions by 2050.

However, new tree and woodland planting needs to be carefully planned. This is not least in recognition of the fact that other natural habitats that may be characteristic in a landscape are equally as important (or in some cases, more so) for ecosystem service delivery.

New tree and woodland planting should therefore take account of the distinctive characteristics of the receiving landscape – with a focus on ‘the right tree in the right place’.
